Tree or Bush?

When we first moved into our rental home we noticed this huge tree/bush in the front yard.  We have been puzzled by it for weeks and can't tell what it is supposed to be.  So this past Saturday Doug took it on.  He decided to prune it and see what it turned into.  We still can't quite tell, but it does look lots better than the picture below now that he is finished.  The kids had so much fun picking up the branches and making their "Nest".  Now everything in my house has become a "nest" for them.  Blankets, pillows, piles of toys...  I can't wait for this to end....I'm sick of all the piles!!
